ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This thesis focuses on finding a CPU cooling method which is affordable and simple to construct. This cooling method must also provide adequate and reliable cooling in hot and dusty climates.

Methods of determining the heat generated by the CPU of a desktop computer were first studied. This was needed in order to design an alternative cooling method capable of removing the generated heat[1]. This generated heat needs to be eliminated; otherwise, the CPU temperature may exceed the recommended limit, which in many cases can cause permanent damage. This analysis includes calculating the heat dissipated through a conventional CPU heatsink, as well as other methods which are simpler to implement.

Alternative cooling methods which currently exist are discussed, and the possibility of using a Peltier junction-thermosyphon combination to cool the CPU was studied. This cooling method has the advantage of providing a lower CPU temperature than that resulting form the use of an active heatsink and requiring no moving components.

[1] Most CPU manufacturers do provide a theoretical maximum heat generated value; however, this is not necessarily the amount of heat which is actually generated at the surface of the CPU.
